Match Report Round 1 Seniors: Moreton Magic vs Western Power

The inaugural BPL was underway at Ivor Marsden Memorial Park. Moreton Magic were hoping for their first victory of the BPL and Western Power hoped to continue where they had left off, after a victory against the Southern Rockets . There was a lot to play for and both teams knew the conditions well, as earlier both teams played on field 2. So this game was shaping up to be a good one.

Moreton Magic won the toss and elected to bat first. Once again the Western Power’s bowling attack was dominant, as they broke through early. This time Sean Lutter took the wicket of the dangerous Jack Beath and started the innings with a wicket maiden. Magic upped the tempo, with Preston White and Cameron Trask hitting multiple sixers to round out the powerplay. Power hit back with some quick wickets of White and Webster, which created a mini-collapse for the Magic. Cameron Trask and Matt Schubert both had important innings for the Magic. Trask 69 not out and Schubert 35 of 31 deliveries. Donal Whyte showed why he is one the best bowlers in the BPL with figures 3/17 , he took some important late wickets which really restricted the Magic’s final total. In the end the Magic finished with 5/133.

Both Openers Jake Cross and Steve Paulsen were in good touch as they had just come off a 73 run partnership in the last game against the Rockets . After a good first over by Preston White, the openers got 24 of the next two overs . The Power’s aggressive running was the cause of their first wicket. After the dangerous wicket of Paulsen, he was run out for 18. Captain Harrison Wood and Jake Cross then stood for a 48 run partnership as they cruised through the middle overs and were looking like they would take the victory . Until Chris Abbey took two important wickets, of Jake Cross and Harrison Wood. All of the sudden the Power were behind the run rate and the Magic had the momentum coming into the final overs. The scenario was set, Power needed 23 of 12 balls with 5 wickets remaining . In the end some clutch bowling from Darcy Murphy and some good late catches sealed the Moreton Magic’s first ever BPL victory.

Magic Won by 7 runs.
